The Importance of a Music Education

Why do we love music education in NWSS? Why do our students strive to perform at high levels? Why do they keep signing up for music classes?

We truly believe that if you create a community that is engaging, positive and respectful, and then work together to create goals and then reach for them, then people simply will want to be a part of it! The music community at New Westminster Secondary School is created by many, including students, music teachers, parents, other arts professionals, principals and vice-principals, school board trustees...

Here are some of the results of participation in a performing music ensemble:

  • Encourages self discipline
  • Develops social awareness and emphasizes the importance of cooperation and communication
  • Provides an emotional outlet
  • Builds self-esteem
  • Creates community
  • Provides and outlet for self-expression and creativity
  • Develops fine and gross motor skills
  • Develops both independence and collaboration, simultaneously when actually playing with people
  • Creates a seamless connection between motivation, instruction, assessment and practical application, leading to "deep understanding"
  • Integrates mind, body and spirit
  • Exercises and develops higher order thinking skills including analysis, evaluation, and "problem-finding"
  • Fosters community by creating a common language to express emotions and ideas, enhancing empathy.
  • Is really, really FUN and SATISFYING

Donate to NWSS Music!

If you wish to make a donation to a particular student for the BANDATHON/CHOIRATHON, use the paypal button above to make your donation, and then send an email to sclements@sd40.bc.ca with the amount and the name of the student.  Thank you!

Much of our ability to purchase new equipment and instruments, as well as maintain repairs, is realized through donations. We appreciate any support you may be able to offer the NWSS Music department and our students.

Donations can come in all shapes and sizes...

We are ACCEPTING donations of all kinds, whether it be cash or cheque, or used instruments of all sorts.

Our goals are:

  • to provide good quality instruments to students who need them;
  • to provide scholarships for our students’ future studies;
  • to make our band and choir trips affordable for everyone.

Gifts large and small are very much appreciated.  We currently do not need any pianos, although excellent, high quality pianos might be useful.

Make a gift in honour of your favourite student, teacher or in memory of a loved one – or simply because you love music and the opportunity for students to learn and perform. It’s a wonderful way to support the music program which means so much to our students, their families and our community.

Leave a legacy of harmony!

For more information on the many ways you can make a gift, email Miss Proznick (kproznick@sd40.bc.ca) or Mr. Clements (sclements@sd40.bc.ca)
