Z Block Expectations

Jazz Bands, Jazz Choirs and Chamber Choir are run as credited courses from 7:30am-8:30am. Every morning there are 3 or 4 full ensemble rehearsals occurring in the music department, making it a very busy place in the mornings.

Strings run after school Monday and Wednesday from 3:15pm to 4:30pm.
Senior Choir runs after school Tuesday and Thursday 3:15pm to 4:30pm.

All Instrumental Jazz Ensemble members must be registered in concert band concurrently. Exceptions can be made for IB French Immersion students at the ensemble director’s discretion.

The music department adheres to the school policy regarding absences and tardiness in all classes, including off-timetable classes.
Members of the jazz ensembles must be committed to attending all full-ensemble rehearsals as well as jazz band sectionals.

Frequent absence or lateness for any Z block class for inadequate reasons shows a lack of commitment to the ensemble, resulting in inconsitency and poor results.
There will be consequences for students who cannot commit to the schedule. In order for our groups to meet and exceed expectations, we must all be present at rehearsals.

Students will be placed in the jazz band at their grade level. Typically a jazz band is made up of 4-5 trumpets, 4-5 trombones, 5 saxphones, and one each of bass, drums, piano, and guitar. It is essential to the teaching of this music that the sections are balanced. An unbalanced section will limit the success of the group. If there are over 30 students registered for a jazz band at any grade level, students will be placed in another jazz ensemble based on their playing ability. Spaces for bass, guitar, drums and piano are limited, and these positions may be auditioned. Jazz band requires at minimum an intermediate level of music reading and technique for all players including bass, guitar, piano and drums.

Donate to NWSS Music!

If you wish to make a donation to a particular student for the BANDATHON/CHOIRATHON, use the paypal button above to make your donation, and then send an email to sclements@sd40.bc.ca with the amount and the name of the student.  Thank you!

Much of our ability to purchase new equipment and instruments, as well as maintain repairs, is realized through donations. We appreciate any support you may be able to offer the NWSS Music department and our students.

Donations can come in all shapes and sizes...

We are ACCEPTING donations of all kinds, whether it be cash or cheque, or used instruments of all sorts.

Our goals are:

  • to provide good quality instruments to students who need them;
  • to provide scholarships for our students’ future studies;
  • to make our band and choir trips affordable for everyone.

Gifts large and small are very much appreciated.  We currently do not need any pianos, although excellent, high quality pianos might be useful.

Make a gift in honour of your favourite student, teacher or in memory of a loved one – or simply because you love music and the opportunity for students to learn and perform. It’s a wonderful way to support the music program which means so much to our students, their families and our community.

Leave a legacy of harmony!
